State Policies Affecting Pain Management: Relevance, Progress & Next Steps
Release Date: July 2007 Expiration Date: July 31, 2008

This program is sponsored by the Dannemiller Memorial Educational Foundation.
Supported by an educational grant from Purdue Pharma LP.
NEEDS STATEMENT
Federal and state policy regarding opioids needs to achieve a balance between efforts to control drug abuse and maintain drug availability for legitimate medical purposes. Federal controlled substances law affirms the essential medical value of drugs that are controlled substances. Imprecise legal definition of terms allows patients to be confused with addicts. In addition, some states require physicians to report opioid-dependent patients to the government. Recommendations are offered to revise state laws and to improve communication between health care professionals and regulators.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the enduring materials, participants should be able to:
- Define quality of and disparities in state pain policies.
- Describe how state policies have changed over time.
- Describe how pain treatment for the same patient could differ under current state policies.
- Examine methods being used to improve pain policies.

Physicians, psychologists and nurses interested in pain management, attendees of the annual APS meeting.
