Statement of Need
Significant positive associations have been found between chronic pain and mood and anxiety disorders. The latest theories indicate there are common neurochemical pathways and shared mechanisms in pain, emotions and physical symptoms in depression. Both serotonin and norepinephrine dysregulation are implicated in both the pathogenesis of depression and the perception of pain. As a result, antidepressants that block reuptake of both serotonin and norepinephrine, such as the tricyclic antidepressants have been used to treat pain syndromes in patients with or without comorbid depression or anxiety. Accordingly, it is important to update healthcare providers on the association between chronic pain and mood and anxiety disorders and how to effectively treat patients so affected.

This audio/slide presentation is intended for physicians, pharmacists and nurses who are interested in the management of patients with chronic pain and co-morbid mood and anxiety disorders
