Closing Remarks

JG: Dr. Bennett, thank you so much for your time today. Do you have any closing remarks?

DB: Pain management is the responsibility of every healthcare professional. Experts in the discipline of pain medicine may be consulted when formulating a treatment program to manage acute or chronic pain.

Pain is treated best using a rational pain medicine paradigm, based on the needs of the individual patient. The goal of any analgesic therapy should be to prevent peripheral and central sensitization whenever possible. Optimal pain control is accomplished with a balanced analgesic approach that allows for analgesic synergism with the least incidence of adverse events.

The safety and efficacy of opioids have been demonstrated over many years (without evidence of end organ damage). Both sustained release and rapidly acting agents should be available to the patient. There is a quote I often use by Primo Levi:

If we know that pain and suffering can be alleviated and we do nothing about it, we, ourselves, are tormentors.
