Combination Medicines
Some drugs, such as acetaminophen or aspirin, are combined with caffeine or a sedative drug, which may be more effective than just pure analgesics. Some combination drugs are available over the counter. However, an analgesic-sedative combination can only be obtained by prescription from your doctor. The patient should be carefully monitored by his/her doctor, in part because of the addictive nature of the drug which could lead to chronic daily headaches.
Other Medications
Triptans are used for people who have both migraines and tension headaches. Because of their potential to be addictive and their side effects, opiates (narcotics) are rarely used.
These medicines are not a cure for headaches, only intended to temporarily relieve the symptoms. Remember that excessive use of these drugs may cause headaches. For any questions about these medications and their risks and benefits, consult your doctor.
