There are many different types of headaches, but the most common types are tension and migraine headaches. Approximately 30% to 78% of the general public experience tension headaches sometime in their lives. Some people that experience tension headaches treat themselves instead of visiting their doctor. One of the problems that can arise from treating yourself is the overuse of over-the-counter pain relievers. This overuse can cause Medication Overuse Headaches (MOH). To avoid MOH, do not use over-the-counter pain relievers more than 9 days a month.

There are a number of medications available to reduce or stop the pain of a headache, including by not limited to:

•  Analgesics

•  Combination Medicines

•  Other Medications

These medicines are not a cure for headaches, only intended to temporarily relieve the symptoms. Remember that excessive use of these drugs may cause headaches. For any questions about these medications and their risks and benefits, consult your doctor.

TIPS:

•  Get 6-8 hours of sleep every night.

•  Eat a sensible diet on a regular basis that includes fruits, vegetables, carbohydrates, and protein.

•  Exercise regularly.

•  Drink plenty of water (dehydration may trigger a headache).

•  Limit your caffeine intake. A withdrawal of caffeine after too much caffeine can cause headaches.

•  Stress may cause headaches as well. Try relaxation techniques to relieve stress.
