Second-degree burns

When the burn has traveled past the first layer of skin and into the second layer, the injury is called a second-degree burn. Typical signs of a second-degree burn will be blistering with intense redness and a splotchy appearance. It is usually accompanied by severe pain and swelling. If the burn is no larger than 3 inches in diameter, treat it as you would a minor burn. However, if the burn is a larger area or if it is on the hands, feet, groin, buttocks, face or major joint, it should be treated as a major burn and you should seek immediate medical treatment.
