Needs Assessment:
Many family physicians are reluctant and apprehensive about prescribing opioids for their chronic pain patients. This is largely due to real or perceived legal barriers that limit effective chronic pain management and concerns regarding misuse, abuse and diversion of opioids. The purpose of this activity is to provide participants with information to develop and manage the best pharmacologic treatment options for their chronic pain.

Target Audience:
This symposium is intended for physicians, physician assistants, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and nurses who are attending the AAFP Scientific Assembly.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Evaluate the pain condition and develop the best pharmacologic treatment options for chronic pain patients
  2. Apply principles of rational polypharmacy to better manage chronic pain
  3. Assess benefits and controversy of prescribing NSAIDs for management of chronic pain
  4. Assess benefits and risks in prescribing opioids for chronic pain

Method of Participation:
This symposium will consist of lectures with accompanying slide presentations followed by a question and answer session.
